An employer surely cannot ask for passcodes because it is against the terms of service of most social media sites to give that info to any third party.
That's invasion of privacy. It's none of their damn business. But, if an employee asked their employer/supervisor if they have a Facebook account, that would be different. If you want to know about someone's 24/7 life, then pay them for 24/7 work.
Employers needs to stop using social media as a way to impede candidates from being hired. Whatever people do in their social time is their own business and employers shouldn’t mix people’s private life and work life. As long as they have a clean background check and meet the job requirements then that should be enough.
