This year we’re going behind the scenes to learn about the origins of Juneteenth, beyond the legend of Juneteenth, which says it was merely a late notification of emancipation. For, Juneteenth, like Black History Month is a celebration that nobody had to give us, we created it for ourselves and have been celebrating it for hundreds of years, now. In other words it is an act of self-determination. Today we want to look at other acts of self-determination in a long history of African American self-determination, starting with the Raid on Harper’s Ferry with John Brown, et. al. and the support of people like Mary Ellen Pleasant and Martin R. Delaney.
